they used to be divided up into various feudal duchies and tribes, but were unified in a peaceful expansion of socialist (or, isj's equivalent of socialism) ideals some time in the 1860s. They typically live in the northern part of the western hemisphere, the continent of Pashaj, their homeland. they also have four eyes with white irises and two large, deer-like antlers on their head. they have colorful skin of nearly every shade on the rainbow that seems to have no bearing on offspring. they're typically more boney and.pointy looking than their southern cousins. The sheolites of isj are an "offshoot" of the more southern saaj. When humans reemerged and began exploring the ruins of ancient temples, they attacked, viciously and often lethally. Trapped within small confines, isolated from intelligent life, they were driven mad. Their spiritual inclination was to travel, explore, and interact with humans and other spirits. They were to be avoided at all costs, or destroyed if necessary.Īnd over the course of their millenia-long imprisonment, the temple-keepers had suffered. Humans remembered the once-playful temple-keepers as enemies of the gods, frightful demons that were largely responsible for the fading of the gods from the physical realm. By the time of the human renaissance, the only stories that remained of the temple-keepers were garbled from the passage of time. The ancient temples, like most of the physical works of the gods, were slowly forgotten and fell into ruin as human civilization declined over hundreds of years. There was nobody left to free the temple-keepers, as humans did not understand the magic that bound them to their temples. Most of the gods were slain, and the few that remained were driven from the world into the Faded realm, or left chained and powerless. The humans eventually gained the advantage in the war. This was intended to be a temporary measure until peace returned, but it was not to be. However, it also left them vulnerable - humans frequently assumed they were working directly with the gods and killed them, whereas some of the more belligerent gods destroyed them for their service to the humans.Įventually, in order to protect the spirits, most of the gods agreed to bind them to their temples, which had become neutral zones and largely abandoned by humans during the war. This position made them uniquely well suited to commune between the two sides. They were technically servants of the gods, but in their day-to-day (or century-to-century) life, they dealt with humans far more often. When humans and gods went to war, the temple-keepers were a go-between for the two sides, but often found themselves as casualties. They lacked advanced intelligence and, if left to their own devices, would have traveled around the world unhindered. In those days, they were fairly harmless, if occasionally irritating. They were originally simple temple-keeping servants who helped priests during services and ran errands for more powerful gods. Others have set themselves up as figures of worship, intending to lead their devout followers on a grand crusade against the land of the humans imprisoning their father. Some possess unfortunates, and sometimes these unfortunates are great warriors, or leaders, or mages. Some have gathered great power to themselves, either with magical weapons and armor or by learning the secrets of the arcane they didn't already possess. The larger, more coherent ones have spread far and wide. The lesser ones are nuisances, exacting acts of petty revenge on the outskirts of human settlements. These fragments formed semi-sentient creatures - demons, whose baseline for human existence was suffering and torment at the hands of humans. In its imprisonment, the creature's mind began to fragment. Instead, their leaders caged it, tore its wings from its body, and imprisoned it deep below the Earth, where its power would continue to serve them forever. When in learned of this, it confronted their leaders, intending to strip them of their power. One night, it learned that the humans had been using its teachings to suborn and enslave the nearby city-states in preparation for invasion. Under its guidance, these humans grew from a small village to a great city. Once, a celestial being descended to Earth to teach humans its ways.
